Historic New England Senior Curator Nancy Carlisle commemorates Women’s History Month along with the Abigail Adams Historical Society by presenting a talk on “The Remarkable Women of the Quincy Familyâ€.Â

In a family where six successive generations of Quincy men held prominent public roles in the civic life of Boston and New England, the women in the family have long been overshadowed. But in reality it is because of them that we know as much as we do about their husbands, fathers, and brothers. When we shine a light on the lives of the Quincy wives and daughters—cousins of Abigail Adams’s—we learn about the role that intelligent, articulate, and engaged women played in the political and cultural life of the region.
Nancy Carlisle is Senior Curator of Collections at Historic New England, where she has worked for close to thirty years. Through her research, writings, and public programs, she uses stories drawn from the collections to engage people in a deeper understanding of their own histories. She has been involved in the opening and reinterpretation of numerous properties, including the Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm, Cogswell’s Grant, and Castle Tucker, and in the development of traveling exhibitions promoting Historic New England’s collections regionally and nationally. She is the author of the award-winning book Cherished Possessions: A New England Legacy and the co-author with Melinda Nasardinov of America’s Kitchens. She has spent the past three years focusing on the Quincy House and the family who lived there as part of a major reinstallation that was completed in 2015.
